Vino is red, violets are blue….

February is great for two reasons.

1. January is over, phew

2. Valentine’s Day is coming…..

Hang on, don’t cringe just yet, I’m not the greatest romantic either but if you ask me Valentine’s Day doesn’t deserve its guilty-pleasure reputation. Love it or loathe it I think there’s something in it for everyone. Chocolates, flowers, champagne, expensive weekends away, 6 course meals, scented candles and…. err, well, you get the picture…. (blush) it gives us a whole new reason to indulge all our senses…..

No I’m definitely not one to pooh-pooh the list of benefits of Valentine’s Day, au contraire, I’m more than happy to partake in any of the above, sadly though as one who is in the often over-looked category of ‘long term relationship’ you’re more likely to find me on a weekend in Harrogate celebrating all things romantic in March! Don’t get the violins out just yet, having a cheaper belated Valentine’s day isn’t what bothers me, what really gets me is how everything valentine related has turned a peculiar shade of pink. Have you noticed it too? What happened to roses are red?! Those poor guys trying to do the right thing find themselves knee deep in a nightmare from Legally Blonde and the poor women, well they have to ooo and ahh in all the right places… don’t be rude, I mean when receiving their pink coloured gifts of course…..!

Sadly I don’t think all things pathetically pink are going away any time soon but I do think there’s a chance for you to reclaim your dignity this valentine’s day. Celebrate with a decent bottle of red wine that will warm even the most unromantic of hearts. Open up your senses to The Hundred Line Cabernet Sauvignon/ Shiraz 2005, Coonawarra, Australia, £13.99 from Sainsbury’s. This is a wine as complex as any woman. It hosts aromas of black liquorice, hints of eucalyptus, tobacco and ripe black fruits on the nose. The palate is succulent but not sweet, full of fruits of the forest flavours and cigar box notes on the finish.

Miss Bouquet’s top tip:
As the saying goes it’s more rewarding to give than to receive…… so if you’re not sure what to buy your man this Valentine’s Day then try Finca Flichman Reserva Malbec 2007, Mendoza, Argentina, £6.49, Waitrose. This is one sexy wine, seductively more’ish with rich black cherry flavours that fill the glass and a tantalisingly silky smooth finish. And if that’s not enough to get you in the mood then just give it a go with a nice piece of chunky steak!

    Hi ‘Lil Jo,

Good to hear from you and to know that you are still on your wine mission 🙂 I would recommend Codornui Pinot Noir Brut, this is a pink sparkling wine £9.99 from Oddbins and comes highly regarded from my January Bouquet Best friend, Halo, click here to read more about the wine.

    I hope you enjoy it.
